simple,it means that the D.S was broken,but was fixed.

Refurbished means it broke, and then Nintendo fixed it. The used one hasn't broken yet, and might be just ready to break. I would get the refurbished, they are extensively tested before they are resold.

It means it was busted in some way, but they fixed it. I would buy it, but then try it out right away to make sure nothing's wrong.(if it is, you can bring it back, just hang on to the receipt.)
