Nintendo DS Lite vs Nintendo DSi: Which should I buy?

I’ve been looking at the new Pokemon games recently, and they look pretty good, and I’m thinking of buying them when they release next year. I have a job, and I’m thinking of saving around $25 a week to buy a new DS since I sold mine a few years ago. The main games I want are Pokemon, and Animal Crossing, but will look into a few others. I say those 2 because they were the main games I played when I had a DS about 3-4 years ago, and I kind of miss playing them haha.

Anyways, I’m personally leaning towards the DS Lite. Yes, I know the DSi has a camera, a shop, and a bigger screen. The only thing that attracts me is the bigger screen. I have no use for a camera, and don’t plan on buying points just to download an Animal Crossing clock or calculator. We’ll see though, I may change my opinion overtime. But, the DS Lite is also around $50 cheaper than the DSi. Maybe ebay has a cheaper DSi I can buy, but I’ll look into it for sure. Which model would you recommend for me? Keep in mind, I have another question…

The main reason I’m leaning towards the DS Lite besides cost, is the R4 availability. I’m 16, and need to save up for drivers ed, insurance, etc when that becomes an option next school year. I know so many people that use them, and they think the R4 is the best option for getting a DS. I know a bunch of ROM sites, too. Which version of an R4 cartridge would you say is the best to get? Oh, I’ve been hearing there is no working English ROM for Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver? It has something to do with freezing? Any links on these would be nice, as I’m semi-clueless on this info lol.

And I’ve considered waiting to buy a 3DS, but if it’s going to cost as much as my Xbox did, then there’s no chance I’m buying it haha

I would go with the DS Lite. That’s what I bought because the extra cost of the DSi didn’t seem worth it for the few extra features it has. Another reason I like the DS Lite better is the GBA slot which the DSi doesn’t have.

  5. If you’re into Pokemon games, you may want to stick with the DS Lite. The DSi doesn’t have any gameboy slot, so you’d be limited to playing only the 4th and 5th generation Pokemon games. The good thing about the DSi is that the sound quality is better, and can be set higher than the DS Lite. Also, the new Pokemon games will probably have a use for the camera. The R4 can also be used for the DSi (My brother bought one, and it worked great! Until he found out it was a fake). R4s are great, but you have to be sure that the one you get is real, and not a fake. An R4 for the DSi can be found here: http://www.r4-ds-card.com/ I have to tell you, though, I am a lot happier with my DSi than I was with my DS Lite. But getting the DSi would cost more, and you have to risk all those gameboy games that you play…

Over the years, I’ve owned a DS Lite and I currently own a DSi. My brother has owned 2 DS Lites and 2 DSis…

  6. I would say wait it out for the 3DS and the two new pokemon games. Black and White. Also you kind of have to count on Nintendo not making anymore games for the DS once the 3DS comes out. Because let’s face it, that is the history of Nintendo.

But if you want to just get something now go for the Lite. I have been a user of the Lite for years and enjoy it’s company on long train rides or flights to New York. The R4 is a nice thing to have however…

As Far as I know there is no Working ROM for HG and SS.

  7. You should definitely go for the DS lite.
There are working English ROMs for Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver. I use CycloDS.
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showforum=37 should get you started in the whole ‘NDS scene’

I recommend the AceKard or SCDS2. Avoid anything labeled R4 or N5. Your choice though.
