ds is better for all the reasons mentioned above BUT how careful will he be w/ it? my nephew lost his gameboy and his ds (had to save to buy his 2nd ds)

Based on that – unless your son is very responsible 7 yr old, see what you can get (ds or gameboy) used w/ games either online ,like ebay, or a local game store – most sell used.

Because the gameboy is outdated you’re more likely to find a great deal that will get him by for a couple yrs with less risk to your wallet.

I'm going to answer this more-so from previous experience. You should get the Nintendo DS not only because it does play both types of games but as a nintendo product it is practically indestructable. One thing that could pose a problem is that the stylus can be lost or be a danger to a younger child. That is an important factor to consider because your child is only seven years old.

I believe DS has backwards comnpatibility so even if you wish to buy Gameboy Advance games they would work just as well on the DS. The advantage of the DS is that it is a new innovative way to play games. The touch-screen monitor is quite user-friendly and kid-friendly. In terms of its durability, the DS will obviously last quite a while before the next Nintendo handheld model releases. Additionally you have a much wider selection of games with the DS.

I say get the DS. Since DS is compatible with GBA games, he should have no problem buying the game that he wants. The only reason you would get a GBA is 1) if he wants to play older Gameboy games and 2) it's cheaper to buy than the DS. To be sure, ask him what game he wants to play really bad. That often guarantees what handheld to buy. If he, for example, wants Brain Age or the latest Pokemon game, then by all means, get the DS.

Yeah, the sales guy is right, honestly. More bang for your buck with the DS and it is current as the others are getting more and more outdated.

I would say a DS, only because the DS can play Gameboy games, plus the DS is going to replace it very soon. The DS is the highest selling handheld gaming device since last year and still on top. Most games are very child-friendly as well if thats an issue. also, The price is not much different if you can find a good used DS on craigslist.com. hope this helps

DS is a much better choice, it does play both, and im sure newer versions will come out but it will be OK to stay with the DS for quite a while.
