once you beat diamond (beat elite 4 and fill up the REGULAR poke dex)

then put the old game in the bottom and you can get them over pal park.
References :
Okay, first off, you don't have to have your son beat the game on his GBA, so don't listen to the other person who answered. You DO need to defeat Pokemon Diamond, though (If your sonh has it). Here's how you transfer the Pokemon. Can be done ONCE A DAY only (real time).

1. beat Pokemon Diamond.
2. Make sure you have six Pokemon (at least) on the game you want to transfer Pokemon from.
3. Put the GBA game into the GBA slot on your DS (it's covered by a slot protector thingy that needs to be removed).
4. Turn on your DS and hit "Pokemon Diamond" icon.
5. Once your game turns on, hit "Migrate Pokemon from Pokemon FireRed (example). Then you go to your PC on that game and migrate the Pokemon you want to transfer.*
6. Go to the Pal Park on Route 221 (I think, but it's the place on the sea) and catch your Pokemon,
*The Pokemon you transfer can't be an Egg or know any Hidden Moves.
References :
Defeated Pokemon Diamond and have had it defeated for a year and a half (I beat it on only three or four months because I have the guide to it). I've transferred Pokemon from my GBA when my character in my GBA hadn't defeated the Elite Four.

Another Thing to be aware of is he may only transfer 6 pokemon at a time. So he should only choose the ones he cares MOST about.
References :
Well, the Pokemon aren't stored on the system, they're stored on the game cart. Since the Nintendo DS can play all Gameboy Advance games, he has nothing to worry about if he sells his GBA. However, he can't trade his Pokemon on one GBA game to another from a Nintendo DS nor can he battle against his friends, so if he likes to trade/battle with his friends, he should keep the GBA. He can put his GBA Pokemon onto a NDS Pokemon game if he wants through something called the Pal Park in the NDS version, but he won't be able to use this function unless he meets certain requirements in the game, which may take him awhile to do.
References :
Experience

yes you can only if he beats the elite four AND completes the pokedex (the first one not the national) and he can transfer every pokemon he'll want but you can only transfer once a day on each game and you have to go to the pal park ( ruby shappire, emerald, fire red, and leafgreen only) you have to put the GBA game into the slot of the ds then go to the menu of the diamond game and select transfer pokemon play the game just scroll down to the main menu where it says "play game, new game, settings and stuff and you will see it and go to the pal park that is all also you can only transfer 6 pokemon a day
