The wi-fi is built in
BUT if you want to browse the internet you have to buy a brower from Opera Software (there is one for the regular DS and then one for the DS Lite).
The processor is a little slow and it can't process sound or video but it's pretty good for sites like google, amazon, wikipedia etc...
References :
I have a DS Lite with browser.

This is what a normal DS can do in terms of multiplayer:
1. Connect to up to 8/16 (I forget) players, as long as ONE PERSON has the card of that game. Not as good as if everyone has the game. Known as DS Download play, or Single Card play.
2. Connect to up to 8/16 players with the same game, This will have the most options. Known as Multicard play
3. Connect to nintendo wifi, using it as a proxy to communicate with other DSes. Often has more options than DS download, but less than Multicard play.

NOTE: The following can ONLY be done with either:
A modified DS (you modify an the warranty is GONE).
A DS supercard/flash card.
A DS emulator (not recommended if you ever do it, you might break copyrights and most emulators "apparently" can't save)
This is what you can do:
Browse the internet using the wifi connection like an internet browser would (completely pointless with an Emulator)
Use certain .exe files
Emulate SNES, GBA, NES, N64, ETC games (yes, on the DS). Again, kinda pointless on an emulator.
Save MULTIPLE games onto the DS and play them without the card (will probably break copyright if you do this).
